Play Therapy

Play Therapy

"Play Therapy is based upon the fact that play is the child's natural medium of self-expression." Virginia Axline

What is Play Therapy?

Play Therapy is a therapeutic approach which allows children to explore, process and express themselves to work through difficulties in their lives through play. This is done without the need to verbally express themselves.

Play therapy sessions may help a child to build healthy relationships, develop their social skills, manage their emotions safely, work through personal trauma and develop their confidence and resilience.

A play therapist's role is to create an environment where children can be reflective towards their challenges and with support, resolve and grow towards a successful future.

The Play Therapy Toolkit

Children work through their difficulties in a way personal to them. For this reason a complete toolkit will be included every session. The toolkit includes:

Role play
Creative arts (painting, collage, drawing)
Messy Play
Masks
Clay
Small world/ miniatures
Sand tray and symbols
Therapeutic stories
Tools to explore emotions
Puppets
Musical instruments
Movement and dance tools
Games

Where will the Play Therapy take place?

We have our own play therapy room where sessions will take place weekly in a confidential space. Scheduled meetings with the child's parents or carers will take place to ensure a child-centred approach. All parties are offered support and advice. Play therapy is a longer term therapy, for long term change-due to this we hold a minimum of 12 sessions.
